Save the Children Philippines raises concern on polio outbreak, calls on parents, LGUs to support immunization of children

Save the Children Philippines has called on communities, parents and carers to support the government’s immunization campaign for babies and children amid the re-emergence of polio disease after 19 years.

The Department of Health (DOH) on Thursday declared a polio outbreak, three days after a poliovirus case was confirmed in a 3-year old girl from Lanao Del Sur. A second poliovirus case was confirmed in a 5-year old boy in Laguna.

Atty. Alberto Muyot, Chief Executive Officer of Save the Children Philippines said children in deprived and marginalized areas are more at risk because they have weak immune system and live in areas with scarce water and poor sanitation.

He said local health officers and barangay leaders should assist parents and carers to have babies and children complete immunization as environmental samples of poliovirus were found in the sewage of Manila and waterways

of Davao.

“No child should die from preventable causes like poliovirus,” said Muyot in a statement. “We call on local health officials and parents to have babies and children complete immunization as children across the Philippines face risks of contracting polio with the emergence of a child infected with virus and contamination of water systems in cities of Manila and Davao.”

Save the Children Philippines has advocated the passage of Republic Act 11148 or the First 1,000 Days law that scales up health and nutrition support for pregnant and lactating mothers and children in the first 1,000 days of a child’s life, or the first two years.  It includes complete immunization to protect the child from dying due to preventable causes.

Dr. Amado Parawan, Health and Nutrition Advisor of Save the Children Philippines said the steady decline in polio vaccines coverage for children at 66 per cent in 2018 compared to the recommended 95 per cent contributed to the polio outbreak.

He said complete immunization is critical to the child’s survival in the First 1,000 days, which is up to two years old.

Dr. Parawan called on parents and carers not to hesitate to have their children get complete immunization including polio and measles.

“A complete immunization is the first line of defense for children to have a healthy start in life,” said Parawan. “We call on local health officers to intensify campaigns for complete immunization as these vaccines can save their children’s lives.”

Hotel suppliers show, a must-attend for industry professionals

Projections by industry experts indicate that the local hospitality business is expected to grow in the coming years. The Department of Tourism forecasts tourist arrivals in 2020 to continue to be on the upswing, as the number of visitors to the country from January to April this year rose by 8.15 percent to 223 million. Likewise, the local market is also expanding, driving the development of local tourism.

In fact, investments in travel and tourism are expected to reach P164 billion in 2028. Likewise, the expected number of visitors to the country by 2028 will reach P665 billion, projected to bring in P6.28 trillion to the hospitality industry.

Merril Yu, special consultant and advisor of Hotel Suppliers Show, the gateway for global brands and manufacturers to connect people in the hospitality industry for the past decade, said the opportunity to gather suppliers and buyers cuts down on the time to connect with each company on a personal basis.

“Before our show, buyers and sellers engaged in traditional means of need and source on a painstaking and time-consuming manner,” Yu explained. “While the age of Google helps, nothing can beat a one-stop gathering of seekers and providers together to talk, touch and feel the merchandise in person. Google cannot provide that.”

Last year, the Hotel Suppliers Show had 13,226 trade visitors and 270 participating brands. This year, the event is set to occupy a bigger floor area and showcase more trusted suppliers for the different sectors of the hospitality industry. From the front desk to the back of the house, from the kitchen to housekeeping, and from construction materials to furniture, the event brings together a comprehensive showcase that will range from design and decor, furniture, fixture and equipment, as well as hospitality technology and suppliers show. Food and beverage will also be a big part of this.

Yu, who was Mabuhay Gold-Hotelier of the Year awardee for 2013, said there is always a need to refresh one’s knowledge of what industry leaders are doing and proposing, as well as hearing experts’ advice on how these could be adapted to the local ecosystem.

“In the last decade, the dramatic change has been in the dramatic increase in hotel construction taking place all throughout our country,” he explained. “Hotels are no longer a thought or business development plan. Decisions are now in the physical. With that hotel boom, there is a greater need to buy products needed for hotels, and the Hotel Suppliers Show is the best and only international-level platform available in the country — maybe even the best in the region — to really serve all the needs of our industry.”

In the 10 years that Hotel Suppliers Show has been running, its growth indicates its importance to the local hospitality. Apart from being just a sourcing event, a number of technical seminars and learning sessions are a must-attend for industry professionals. These include the National Building and Property Management Summit, Hospitality Management Essentials Seminar, and Building Green Hospitality Forum.

The Hotel Suppliers will be held from September 19 to 21, 2019 at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City.

Cebu Continues to Grow as a Prime City for Real Estate Investments

Manila, Philippines – Lamudi’s Housing Fair in Cebu is happening on September 21 and 22 at the SM Cebu Trade Hall. The real estate platform takes the housing fair to Cebu once again as data shows the city is popular for home buyers and investors.

With an increase of 11% in the number of leads generated in the first half of 2019 compared to the same period in 2018,Cebu continues to be a popular city for property seekers who are interested in property buying or investment. According to data from Lamudi, there is a significant interest in Cebu properties at various price points.

Property seekers interested in Cebu real estate look for properties in Banilad, which ranked first as the most searched in the province, with Lahug not far behind. According to Lamudi, the top 10 most popular areas in Cebu for real estate searches are:

  • Banilad
  • Lahug
  • Guadalupe
  • Talamban
  • Mabolo
  • Banawa
  • Basak
  • Labangon
  • Mactan
  • Kasambagan

Cebu expresses a healthy interest in home-ownership, specifically in houses worth over P3M. The most searched properties for sale are priced P1.5M on average, and a significant number of property seekers have expressed willingness to buy properties at this price. However, the number of property seekers interested in buying properties worth 3M or more is greater than the combined number of property seekers interested in buying from the P1.7M-3M, P450k-1.7M, and P450,000 or less price ranges.

The top five most-viewed prices for houses for sale are:

  • P1.5M
  • P3.5M
  • P6.5M
  • P5.5M
  • P5M

In terms of interest in rental properties, those costing between P10,000 to P20,000 are the most viewed, followed by properties priced higher at P20,000 to P30,000 and properties priced lower at 5,000 to P10,000. A majority of them have expressed willingness to buy properties costing over P30,000.

The Lamudi Cebu Housing Fair is the third installment of the real estate platform’s series of housing fairs in the Philippines this year. Following the successful events held at the TriNoma Activity Center and in Glorietta early this year, Lamudi is expecting property seekers, investors and real estate professionals to attend the event on September 21 and 22 at the Cebu Trade Hall in SM Cebu.

The Housing Fair, which was a Metro Manila-only event until last year, is returning to Cebu for the second time after a successful event last year at Ayala Center Cebu.

“While real estate opportunities abound within Metro Manila, it’s high time for us to witness first-hand the constantly growing potential of Cebu as a real estate hotspot,” says Lamudi CEO Bhavna Suresh of the Cebu Housing Fair 2018.

Bringing trusted names in real estate together

Major sponsor Federal Land, a household name in property development, will be present together with minor sponsors King Properties, DMCI Homes, BPI Family Housing Loan, and Aboitiz Land. Lamudi is also joined by event partner Subdivision & Housing Developers Association, Inc. (SHDA) in the Cebu Housing Fair.

Attendees can visit booths from Be Residences, Damosa Land, Inc., Saekyung Realty, Philippine Estates Corporation, RFK Holdings, RDAK Land, and more. Lamudi Academy will also hold sessions to educate real estate professionals on online real estate marketing. Property seekers in attendance will also learn about topics surrounding homeownership from industry experts.

Lamudi’s media partners for the Cebu Housing Fair are Philippine Daily Inquirer Property, Business World, Business Mirror, Malaya Business Insight, and The Philippine Star.

Save the Children Philippines calls for intensified clean up drive in schools and households as 400 children aged 5-9 died from dengue

Save the Children Philippines calls for urgent clean up actions in schools and households as deaths due to dengue reached more than 1,021 with 400 of them are children aged 5-9.

The epidemiology bureau of the Department of Health confirmed that cases of dengue have reached 249,332 between January 1 to August 24, 2019, mostly affecting children 5 to 14 years old.  The breakdown of the most affected children are as follows:

·         0-4 years old: 38,768

·         5-9 years old: 56,550

·         10-14 years old: 49,040

·         15-19 years old: 37,850

Atty. Albert Muyot, chief executive officer of Save the Children Philippines said children are the most vulnerable to dengue fever because they are exposed to mosquitoes carrying the virus when they are playing outside or at school.

“We are appealing to parents, carers, and teachers to be on the lookout for possible breeding grounds of dengue mosquitoes at home and in schools and immediately clean them up and conduct fogging,” said Muyot.

Save the Children Philippines is launching an urgent information campaign in the next three months through nationwide radio and social media asking families to be vigilant and step up efforts to protect children from the potentially deadly virus.

“We are particularly targeting deprived and marginalized communities where health centers are difficult to access,” said Muyot.

Save the Children Philippines is strengthening coordination with schools and local communities across the program offices in Caloocan, Malabon and Navotas as well as communities in the Region IV-A and Region X.

Dr. Amado Parawan, health and nutrition advisor of Save the Children Philippines said parents should bring their children to nearest health care centers or hospitals even on early signs of dengue such as fever and rashes.

“Fever in dengue cases can be tricky as there is a tendency that temperature of the body will lower before it will peak. In this case, the dengue could be fatal,” he said.

He also advised parents to avoid bringing children to crowded places such as malls, churches and hospitals where mosquitoes with dengue virus are found.
